What the storm leaves
The island does not make everyone good. It makes every form of rule visible.
01 · Power
The play tests whether authority can ever educate without coercing. Prospero’s triumph becomes moral only when he makes his own power finite.
02 · Freedom
Freedom is concrete and uneven: Ariel gains release, Caliban regains an island still marked by occupation, and Miranda enters another courtly order.
03 · Colonialism
The island is never empty. Naming, teaching, and governing appear as gifts to the giver and dispossession to the governed—a contradiction the comedy cannot dissolve.
04 · Forgiveness
Forgiveness interrupts revenge; it does not prove repentance or erase injury. Its radical force lies in ending repetition, not rewriting the past.
